ε-Polylysine
ε-Polylysine is a linear polymer of lysine. It is produced by streptomyces fermentation and has a broad-spectrum antibacterial effect.ε-Polylysine is polymerized by 25-30 lysine groups, which is relatively stable to pH and heat. Its antibacterial effect is related to the degree of polymerization and the environment. The molecular weight of polylysine is between 3600-4300 which has the best antibacterial activity.
FAs a secondary metabolite, ε-Polylysine was first discovered from the soil bacterium Streptomyces albulus, which is still used in its commercial production. Later, more producers of ε-Polylysine were identified from the family of Streptomycetaceae, including the genera Streptomyces and Kitasatospora, and ergot fungi.ε-Polylysine is synthesized by a cell-membrane-bound nonribosomal peptide synthetase (NRPS)-like enzyme named ε-PL synthetase (Pls).
ε-Polylysine is a small cationic isopeptide made from the essential amino acid L-lysine. It exhibits antimicrobial activity against a wide spectrum of bacteria, yeast, and fungi and is heat stable and active in different food matrices.

ε-Polylysine (ε-PL) is a natural, broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent that inhibits bacteria (e.g., Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and fungi (e.g., Candida albicans, Aspergillus brasiliensis) commonly found in cosmetics, ensuring product quality and safety.
ε-Polylysine (ε-PL) has bactericidal activity against Malassezia furfur (causing dandruff) and Propionibacterium acnes (causing acne), making it useful in hair treatments and anti-acne cosmetics.
ε-PL enhances the antimicrobial efficacy of existing cosmetic preservatives (e.g., octanediol, grapefruit seed extract) and can reduce the required amounts of traditional preservatives (e.g., alkanediols), making cosmetics alcohol-free, paraben-free, and phenoxyethanol-free. As a cationic polymer, ε-PL reduces hair dryness and static electricity, alleviating damage caused by bleaching and improving hair manageability
