Polyquaternium-11
Polyquaternium-11 is a polymer created by linking two smaller building blocks: dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate and vinylpyrrolidone. After these pieces are joined, the chain is treated with diethyl sulfate, which adds a positive charge. This charge is what makes the ingredient behave so well on hair and skin.
First explored in the late 1970s by chemists looking for longer-lasting hold in hair products, Polyquaternium-11 quickly found a place in styling gels, mousses and setting lotions. Over time its smooth, flexible film made it useful in leave-in conditioners, rinse-off conditioners, sprays, creams, sheet masks and even some hydrating facial serums.

Production starts in large reactors where the two monomers are mixed with water and a starter that triggers polymerization. Once the long chain forms, diethyl sulfate is added to quaternize the polymer, locking in the positive charge. The finished solution is filtered, tested for purity then blended into cosmetic bases.
Today you will most often spot Polyquaternium-11 in hair gels, styling mousses, volumizing sprays, conditioning shampoos, wash-off and leave-in conditioners, facial sheet masks, lightweight moisturizers and makeup primers.
Antistatic: The positive charge in the polymer neutralizes the negative charge that builds up on hair and skin. This helps tame flyaways, keeps hair strands from repelling each other and makes combing easier.
On skin it can reduce that dry static feel you sometimes notice after cleansing.
Film Forming: Polyquaternium-11 lays down a thin flexible film that coats each hair or sits lightly on the skin. In hair care this film provides hold, boosts volume and protects against humidity so styles last longer. In skin care it adds a smooth touch, helps lock in moisture and can give products a soft silky finish without heaviness.
