GAE is a colorless or lightly yellow transparent liquid. The main ingredient Sh-polypeptide-123 is a highly purified type III human-like collagen, obtained by yeast fermentation. GAE is widely used in cosmetic and medical beauty product. As a cosmetic ingredient, the recommended amount is 0.5%~15%. Sh-polypeptide-123 is an anti-aging recombinant (recombined protein) human peptide used in skin care that’s created through fermenting a form of yeast called Pichia pastoris (AKA Komagataella pastoris). It’s a biomimetic ingredient that resembles the human collagen alpha-1 (III) chain, a crucial component of type 3 collagen, the second most abundant type in skin.

Recombinant human peptides are exciting ingredients touted to support healthy collagen production and tensile strength, resulting in a visible reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, a decrease in visible skin laxity, improved skin firmness, smoother skin and improved hydration. 

Chemists use bioengineering practices to extract a “code” for a desired DNA sequence into a vector, a particle that can replicate in a host cell. In the case of sh-polypeptide-123, this is the code for collagen alpha-1 (III). Then, this vector containing code is introduced into a host cell (for sh-polypeptide-123, it’s Pichia pastoris yeast cells) and fermented. These host cells are then purified and prepared for use in cosmetics as well as supplements. Sh-Polypeptide-123 is often used in serums, sheet masks, anti-aging creams, concentrated boosters and post-procedure soothing gels where it works alongside humectants and antioxidants to reinforce the skin’s surface.
