UV Absorbers

Methylene Bis-Benzotriazolyl Tetramethylbutylphenol

Methylene Bis-Benzotriazolyl Tetramethylbutylphenol, is a phenolic benzotriazole that absorbs UVB and UVA rays and stabilizes other UV absorbers. It's a "hybrid" sunscreen, which means it transcends the line between chemical sunscreens (those that absorb the rays, which most sunscreens do) and physical sunscreens (the ones that at least partially reflect the sun) and has been described as an organic UV filter produced in microfine organic particles (<200 nm).

A broad spectrum UV absorber, Bisoctrizole, also known as methylene bis-benzotriazolyl tetramethylbutylphenol, is a phenolic benzotriazole that absorbs UVB and UVA rays and stabilizes other UV absorbers.

Methylene-bis benzotriazolyl tetramethylbutylphenol works as a sunscreen in cosmetics and personal care products. Since it is one of the few commercially available filters that is photostable, it has an advantage over the vast majority of commercially available filters in terms of photostability. It is a synthetic broad-spectrum UV filter that aids in protecting skin from UVA and UVB rays, with peak protection occurring at 305 nm for UVB and 360 nm for UVA. In this sense, it can also be regarded as an anti-aging component because it delays the accelerated ageing effects brought on by sun exposure.

It provides a combination of chemical and physical sunscreen sun protection. Microfine pigments found in the molecule help reflect and scatter UV light before it can cause damage to skin, and an organic UV light absorber transforms UV light into harmless heat energy that dissipates from the surface of the skin. Its inability to dissolve in either oil or water is another special characteristic. Research has found that it can aid in enhancing the stability of other sunscreen ingredients.

This ingredient's molecular size keeps it on the skin's surface, making it less likely to cause a sensitized reaction in people whose skin is prone to reacting negatively to synthetic UV filters. The drawback of its hybrid nature is that Methylene Bis-Benzotriazolyl Tetramethylbutylphenol, like the inorganic sunscreens zinc and titanium dioxide, also leaves a white cast on the skin that can be bothersome on darker skin tones.

METHYLENE BIS-BENZOTRIAZOLYL TETRAMETHYLBUTYLPHENOL (NANO), abbreviation MBBT, is an organic solid (yellowish powder). Nano-MBBT is available on the market in the form of a colourless aqueous dispersion. MBBT is practically insoluble in water and soluble to a limited extent in cosmetic oils. The maximum concentration of MBBT is 10 %.

Nano-MBBT is deposited as a protecting film on the upper skin layer and scatters, reflects and absorbs the UV radiation of the sun. In this way the skin is protected against UV radiation and its health damaging effects (sunburn, DNA damage, skin ageing etc). Nano-MBBT is a so-called broadband UV filter with a clear filter effect including in the long chain UV-A range. Nanoscale MBBT in sunscreens is invisible for the human eye and hence does not leave any whitish film on the skin which motivates consumers to make a more generous application. Nano-MBBT is, moreover, characterised by a particularly effective UV light filtration in a broad spectrum.

UV filters minimise the undesired effects of UV radiation on the skin and are, therefore, an important component of sunscreens. By protecting the skin against the dangerous sun radiation, they contribute towards preventing premature light-caused skin ageing and skin cancer. In this connection a distinction is made between soluble organic UV filters and those based on mineral and / or organic pigments. Whereas soluble organic UV filters absorb the UV radiation, transform it into heat and form an invisible protection shield in the upper skin layer, UV filters on the basis of pigments reflect, scatter and absorb the sun radiation already on the skin surface.
