Schizophyllan
The extraction process of Schizophyllan involves:Precipitating the fermentation broth with ethanol to obtain crude extracellular polysaccharide;Extracting the mycelia with hot water, followed by ethanol precipitation of the extract to yield crude intracellular polysaccharide;Deproteinization using either the Sevag method or isoelectric point precipitation in combination with the Sevag method;Final purification through activated carbon decolorization, running water dialysis, ethanol reprecipitation, and vacuum drying to obtain the purified polysaccharide.

In cosmetics and skincare products, Schizophyllan functions primarily as a humectant. It has a relatively safe risk profile and can be used with confidence. It generally poses no risk to pregnant women. Schizophyllan is non-comedogenic (does not cause acne), making it an ideal cosmetic ingredient. It possesses anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties. It effectively repairs sun-damaged skin, provides moisturizing and anti-wrinkle benefits, promoting a plump and hydrated complexion.
Schizophyllan reinforces the physical barrier: By enhancing keratinocyte proliferation and collagen synthesis, it accelerates wound healing. It also induces human β-defensin-2 (hBD-2) expression, boosting antimicrobial peptide activity to defend against microbial invasion.
Schizophyllan maintains a chemical barrier: its triple-helix structure strongly retains water, preserving the stratum corneum’s moisture content, promoting the generation of natural moisturizing factors and alleviating dryness and desquamation.
Schizophyllan’s moisturizing mechanism: the multiple hydroxyl groups form a hydrating film that instantly boosts stratum corneum hydration, while high-molecular-weight schizophyllan (>1,000 kDa) creates a protective film on the skin surface to reduce transepidermal water loss. Schizophyllan provides whitening enhancement:low-molecular-weight schizophyllan (≤10kDa), with its excellent permeability, delivers immediate hydration, whereas high-molecular-weight schizophyllan encapsulates whitening actives such as phenylethyl resorcinol and licorice flavonoids, releasing them gradually through a three-dimensional network to prolong whitening efficacy. Schizophyllan exhibits antioxidant activity: it scavenges OH,DPPH and other free radicals, mitigating UV-induced oxidative damage. Schizophyllan can be used for post-sun repair:it improves sun-induced spots, wrinkles and loss of skin elasticity.
